Sponsorships
The Association considers the education of young people to be the key to a better future for the population in Uganda. The literacy rate in the country is only 69.9% (cf. FRG = 99%). By far the largest group of the approximately 30 million inhabitants in Uganda are children between 0-14 years (50.2%), resulting in an average age of 14.9 years. The population growth rate is over 3.5% and every Ugandan woman has an average of 6 to 7 children.
Almost 90% of Uganda's population lives in rural areas, mostly in scattered settlements. The people there are very poor, mostly without their own income. Often the children live with grandparents or relatives because their parents have died (AIDS rate approx. 6.5%, AIDS orphans approx. 17% of the population).
Since education is also theoretically compulsory in Uganda, the state provides minimal support for schools. Unfortunately, the teachers earn (almost) no money and are therefore not always available. School often doesn´t take place, the classes are huge and the children in one class are of different ages.
The Association currently manages 65 sponsorships (October 2023).
Children for whom the Association finds sponsors are enrolled by Betty Nakajigo in a better - mostly private - school.
One can't learn hungry!
Therefore, the children receive a balanced diet, school and training costs including uniforms and necessary learning materials. In addition, their medical care is provided for in case of illness. On average, everyone has 6-8 malaria infections per year (without mosquito net). Untreated malaria is often fatal for children. If there is money left over at the end of the year, it is spent on mattresses or mosquito nets, for example, and sometimes also on a sack of rice for the sponsored child.
Truffles, champagne, New Year's Eve fireworks, filling up car tanks?

For the basic education (baby and primary school), all the above-mentioned costs are covered by only 300 euros per year!1)

Since the children are enormously poor and live very isolated in the countryside, frequent correspondence is unfortunately not possible. As a rule, however, the godparents usually receive a small letter and a photo of the children from Mrs. Nakajigo once a year.
More? For a small amount of postage, you are welcome to send small parcels to Uganda 2 – 3 times a year via the Association, e.g. a T-shirt and / or a photo, which is cheaper than everyone sending parcels independently.

1) If you want to finance further education (high school, university) for your sponsored child, this amount increases gradually to approx. 500 euros/year due to boarding school costs.
