What's new in July 2025

1. Drinking and water for domestic use in the project

Since last autumn, we have already become aware that the solar pump of the Association for the water supply of the residents in the project and surrounding families is defective. Through extensive research and an exchange between the South and North stakeholders, we were of the opinion that repairs could be successfully completed.

It was not until February 2025 that it became clear that various attempts to restore the pump had been unsuccessful. Not only was there no water from the well, but also three large rainwater tanks and various gutters were dilapidated or unusable. The children were sent to the water hole again.

Because there was an offer of 4,000 euros for a pump, which would cost about 400 euros in Germany, Thomas and Johannes Langsch decided to fly to Uganda with a pump in June and assess the overall situation. Together with specialists from the project as well as the responsible electrician and solar experts on site, it was installed. After a test run, however, it was found that the pipes to the house were defective in several places because they had been hacked through by plantings next to them.

2. Buildings and property wall

During the short stay of five days, there was also a great need for repairs to the kitchen and the property wall.

Despite numerous discussions and proposals for change, it has still not been possible to achieve a reasonable, resource-saving use of firewood.

For most of the day, the kitchen staff works in soot and smoke. The stovepipes are defective and dirty, a stove door is missing, and damp firewood is used.

Again, they were made aware of health hazards and a lack of sustainability. This catastrophic state of affairs is unacceptable!

Afterwards, Renate Blank discussed this again with the responsible chef Sylivia Nalukwata. Cleaning and repairs were arranged and regular documentation was assured.

Since the buildings of the project are located on a slope, heavy rainfall is not only a blessing, but also dangerous. Soil is washed out and mud penetrates.

When erecting the property wall, we relied on a well thought-out and stable construction. After five years, however, the stone masonry begins to partially collapse. The people and buildings are massively threatened by this. Obviously, neither drainage nor waterproofing were installed.

A very prompt solution is necessary here. The complete demolition and re-erection of the section of wall with an appropriate seal seems to us to be expedient.

This is very cost-intensive, and the money is currently not available to the Association, which is why sponsors must be urgently sought.

Best regards and have a nice summer
Renate and team
