Children in Uganda
One of the main concerns of the Association is the support of orphans and children from poor backgrounds. The devastating situation for children in Uganda, especially in the Masaka area, is clearly visible in some figures (see also country information):
- HIV infection rate: 5 – 15 %
- Poverty rate (= less than a dollar/day): 82%
- Doctors: 0.08 / 1,000 population
- Infant mortality: 8.0%
- Infant mortality: 13.8%
- Maternal mortality: 550/100,000 births
- Age structure: 50.4 % (0 - 14 J.), 47.1 % (15 - 64 J.), 2.5 % (older than 65 J.)

Orphans in a village can often be cared for by grandparents, aunts, and uncles, or by neighbors. Very often, however, this exceeds the financial and human resources of the relatives. With a poverty rate of 82%, widespread unemployment and the fact that each family has an average of 7 children of their own, this is not surprising.
Children don't have a chance to take care of themselves. That's why we support them with school fees, nutrition, medical care, and care in case of illness. This gives them the opportunity to become self-reliant and independent people. (see also Sponsorships)
